The Labour Party(LP) has turned Nigeria’s 66th Independence anniversary into a fresh appeal for support ahead of the 2027 general elections, citing the performance of Abia State Governor, Alex Otti, as evidence of what it described as its capacity to provide credible leadership.

The party said Nigerians should not surrender to despair despite the economic hardship, insecurity and other challenges confronting the country.

In an Independence Day statement signed by its National Publicity Secretary, Ken Eluma Asogwa, the Labour Party acknowledged the country’s “many missed opportunities and unfulfilled expectations” since independence.

It, however, said Nigeria’s survival as one indivisible nation despite decades of difficulties remained a reason for hope.

The party argued that citizens must continue to demand accountability from those in authority rather than become resigned to the country’s problems.

“There will surely be joy in the morning,” it said, urging Nigerians not to lose faith in the country.

The Labour Party subsequently linked the Independence message to the 2027 elections, urging Nigerians to consider its candidates across the various elective positions.

It specifically pointed to Otti’s administration in Abia as an example of what it described as the party’s commitment to translating its promises into governance.

“Governor Otti, our pride and a role model in true leadership, has given every Nigerian yearning for change a reason to trust in the candidates of the Labour Party in the coming polls,” the party said.

The party said it had fielded candidates from the presidential level to state assembly positions and urged Nigerians to “look in the direction of the Party for salvation and succour.”

It also called on political leaders to govern with empathy, justice and transparency, saying the welfare and wellbeing of citizens must remain central to national development.

The Labour Party maintained that Nigeria’s current difficulties should not diminish citizens’ belief in the country’s potential.

It reaffirmed its faith in Nigerians and expressed confidence that the country could overcome its present challenges and realise its potential.
