MEXA 1.0 ends in Lagos with live music video production, creative training

The maiden edition of Media Experience & Advancement (MEXA) has concluded in Lagos after three days of training, networking and practical production sessions for filmmakers, cinematographers, musicians, content creators and other creative professionals.

The free creative convention was led by filmmaker and director Akhabue Evans, popularly known as Dir. En’Man, with participants taking part in sessions designed to provide practical exposure to different aspects of media production.

Beyond presentations and discussions, the programme incorporated hands-on activities intended to give participants experience of the production process.

One of the highlights of the convention was a live masterclass during which participants worked on the production of a music video, taking the project from shooting through editing within a single day.

The exercise used a song by one of the participating creatives, who is also a musician, as the basis for the production.

Other attendees became part of the project, taking on different roles in front of and behind the camera, including appearances as canoeists and video models.

The practical exercise gave participants an opportunity to observe how production decisions are made and how different roles are coordinated in moving a creative idea from concept to a completed visual project.

Throughout the three-day programme, En’Man shared his experience with participants, responded to questions and demonstrated production techniques.

The organisers said the programme was structured around learning, collaboration and providing creatives with greater access to practical knowledge.

Following the conclusion of the event, some participants took to social media to share their experiences and express appreciation to En’Man and the team behind the convention.

The final day concluded with a closing ceremony and after-party, providing another opportunity for participants to interact after the training sessions.

Speaking at the end of the programme, En’Man thanked the partners, members of his team and participants who contributed to the maiden edition.

He said he hoped the initiative would lead to further collaborations and opportunities for creatives in subsequent editions.

MEXA was conceived as a platform where people working across different areas of the creative industry could learn, exchange ideas and participate in practical media production.

The Lagos edition brought together professionals and emerging creatives working across filmmaking, cinematography, music and content creation.

While attention among participants has begun to turn towards the possibility of a second edition, the organisers have yet to announce MEXA 2.0 or confirm whether another edition would be held in Lagos or taken to another city.

The conclusion of the inaugural programme therefore leaves the organisers with the task of determining how the initiative develops beyond its first outing.

For participants, however, the three-day event provided not only opportunities to hear from practitioners but also practical exposure to the collaborative process behind creative production.
