Nigeria’s Super Falcons started their quest to be at the 2028 Summer Olympic Games in Los Angeles on a positive note, courtesy of a win over Comoros in the first leg of the second round of qualification.
Remo Stars‘ home ground in Ikenne hosted the tie, but Nigeria was designated the away side because Comoros does not have a CAF-approved stadium.
Despite missing a couple of key players, including Asisat Oshoala, Oluwatosin Demehin, Ashleigh Plumptre and the like, the Super Falcons showed no sign of weakness as they claimed a comfortable win.
Two second-half goals from Michelle Alozie and Uchenna Kanu gave the Super Falcons a 2-0 win in a game where they created a handful of chances.
The Super Falcons created loads of chances in the first half but failed to bury any of them. Rasheedat Ajibade’s effort came off the woodwork as the first half ended goalless.
However, Michelle Alozie broke the deadlock three minutes into the second half as he pounced on Monday Gift’s header in the box off a corner kick.
Uchenna Kanu doubled Nigeria’s lead on the hour mark as she converted from Jennifer Echegini’s quick corner to put the 10-time African champions in firm control of the match.
The match ended 2-0 as the Super Falcons head into the second leg on Tuesday at the same venue with a comfortable lead.
Austin Eguavoen’s side will hope to consolidate the win on Tuesday as they look to progress into the next round of qualification.
The Super Falcons will take on Morocco in the third round of qualification if they see off Comoros on aggregate score as they pursue a place in the women’s football event at the 2028 Olympics in Los Angeles.
