The Delta State Sports Commission has set a N200, 000 reward for anybody who identifies the football spectator that allegedly attacked a match official during the EuroMatch Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) Matchday 10 encounter between Warri Wolves and Kano Pillars in Ozoro, Delta State.
The Guardian learnt that the incident occurred on Sunday, October 25, 2026, at the Southern Delta University Stadium, Ozoro, shortly after the conclusion of the league fixture.
The suspect, who was yet to be identified as of the time of filing this report, allegedly struck one of the match officials in the face, leaving him with a bleeding nose.
The attack reportedly occurred after the match officials had been escorted out of the stadium by security personnel and were at their designated bus, which was to convey them to their hotel.
Following this ugly development, The Chairman of the Delta State Sports Commission, Onoriode Oborevwori, offered a N200,000 reward to anyone who provides credible information leading to the arrest of suspect.
He described the incident as heartbreaking and expressed disbelief that anyone could attack a football official under such circumstances.
The reward, according to a statement issued by Warri Wolves Club Secretary, Henry Ukah, is intended to facilitate the immediate identification and arrest of the suspect and reinforce the Commission’s zero-tolerance stance on hooliganism and violence in football.
Oborevwori stressed that the perpetrator must be identified and made to face the appropriate legal consequences, warning that decisive action would serve as a deterrent to others who might contemplate similar acts of misconduct at sporting events.
He regretted the incident and apologised to the NPFL authorities, referees’ associations and other football stakeholders over the unfortunate development.
The Commission also appealed to members of the public with credible information that could assist the Ughelli Area Command of the police, where the incident had been reported, to come forward and cooperate with security agencies to ensure the suspect’s arrest and prosecution.
Meanwhile, Warri Wolves Football Club has condemned the assault, describing it as reprehensible and dissociating itself from any form of violence against match officials, players, supporters or other individuals.
The club’s Media Officer, Oris Lilian, who confirmed the incident in a statement, said the management promptly intervened after the attack, with its medical personnel administering first aid to the injured official before he was taken to a hospital for further medical attention.
According to the statement, the club’s secretary, Henry Ukah, accompanied by security personnel at the stadium, had escorted the match officials from the field of play to their designated bus after the encounter.
Warri Wolves said the incident had been formally reported to the Ughelli Area Police Division, adding that efforts were on to identify and apprehend the suspect.
