Seven people have been killed after gunmen invaded Georo community in Jos South Local Council of Plateau State on Monday night.
The attackers reportedly stormed the community at about 10:20 p.m., shooting sporadically and killing some victims in their shops and others at a local restaurant.
The attack occurred amid heightened tension in parts of Mangu, Bokkos and Riyom local councils, where the state government recently imposed a dusk-to-dawn curfew following repeated attacks and killings.
A community member, Mr Bot Silas, who confirmed the incident, said the gunmen struck under the cover of darkness, forcing residents to flee for safety.
“The gunmen stormed the community at about 10:20 p.m. and started shooting sporadically, forcing residents to scamper for safety. Seven persons were killed in the attack, which caused serious panic among residents,” he said.
Reacting to the incident, the spokesman of the Berom Youth Moulders-Association, Rwang Tengwong, condemned the killings and called on security agencies to intensify efforts to protect vulnerable communities.
He described the killing of innocent residents as unacceptable and urged the authorities to investigate the attack and bring those responsible to justice.
Tengwong also called for stronger security measures to enable residents to go about their daily activities without fear of further attacks.
