Nigeria’s Flamingos have qualified for the FIFA Women’s Under-17 World Cup final.
The Flamingos made history on Wednesday night, reaching the final of the competition for the first time as they became the first African team to reach the final since the competition began in 2008.
The Nigerian side beat Venezuela in a nervy quarter-final to reach the last four of the competition.
Nigeria sealed a 3-1 victory over the Brazilian girls courtesy of goals from Queen Joseph and a brace from Awawu Bashiru.
The goals came in the second half after the first ended in a stalemate as both sides sized each other up.
However, the Nigerian side scored the opener 10 minutes into the second half.
Queen Joseph scored her first goal of the tournament off a deflected ball that fell to her path in the box.
Awawu bagged a brace from two brilliant efforts within nine minutes, courtesy of assists from Queen Joseph and Oluebube Umejiaku as the Flamingos put the tie out of Brazil’s reach.
Greise Kelly scored a late consolation for the South Americans as Nigeria held on to the final whistle.
The Flamingos will now take on Japan, who beat defending champions North Korea on penalties in Sunday’s final at the Moulay El Hassan Stadium in Rabat.
