African Union (AU) Peace and Security Council has reviewed the implementation of its Post-Conflict Reconstruction and Development (PCRD) Policy, 20 years after its adoption, as regional institutions and development partners examined efforts to support countries emerging from conflict.
The review took place during an open session of the Council on Monday, bringing together its members, AU member states, Regional Economic Communities and partners to share experiences on the implementation of the policy.
The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), through its Permanent Representation to the African Union, participated in the meeting, which formed part of activities marking the 20th anniversary of the adoption of the PCRD Policy.
Côte d’Ivoire, which holds the rotating chairmanship of the AU Peace and Security Council for November, presided over the session.
The policy provides an African Union framework for addressing the challenges facing countries emerging from conflict, with reconstruction and development requiring sustained institutional, political and economic support.
The involvement of Regional Economic Communities in the review also underscores the importance of coordination between continental and regional institutions in addressing post-conflict recovery.
However, the ECOWAS statement did not provide details of the experiences presented by participating countries, the progress recorded in implementing the policy or the specific challenges identified during the session.
