…Raises concerns over cost of living, governance and Nigerians’ right to choose leaders
The presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, has urged the international community to support Nigerians’ right to elect their leaders freely and fairly ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Obi made the appeal on Thursday, November 5, 2026, during a meeting with ambassadors of European Union member countries in Abuja, where discussions focused on Nigeria’s political and economic situation.
The engagement came a day after his meeting with the British High Commissioner, as part of his diplomatic consultations on democracy, governance and the welfare of Nigerians.
According to Obi, the discussions with the EU ambassadors centred on the rising cost of living, the welfare of citizens, the state of governance and preparations for the forthcoming elections.
He called on the international community to stand with Nigerians in protecting their democratic rights, particularly their freedom to choose their leaders through peaceful, free and credible elections.
Obi stressed that the foundation of democracy was the recognition and protection of citizens’ right to make political choices without interference.
He maintained that Nigerians must be allowed to determine who governs them in an atmosphere of peace and respect for democratic principles.
The former Anambra State governor thanked the European Union Commission for the invitation and the opportunity to engage with representatives of its member countries on issues affecting Nigeria.
The meeting forms part of Obi’s growing diplomatic engagements ahead of the 2027 elections, as political parties and stakeholders intensify preparations for the next electoral contest.
Obi, who is running on the platform of the NDC, has continued to emphasise democratic accountability, citizens’ welfare and the need for a peaceful electoral process.
His political movement operates under the slogan, “A New Nigeria is POssible.”
