Sequel to the inspection visit by the technical team, ahead of the eighth Government College Ughelli (GCU) Relays and the prompt response to the observations and recommendations adduced, the all-important Green Light has been given for a hitch-free hosting of the Intercollegiate athletics meet.
Once the Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN) former Technical Director, Commodore Omatseye Nesiama (rtd) and NAATO Delta State President, Prof. Jeff Okpako, made their instructive recommendations, the Main Organising Committee of the yearly GCU Relays went to work at a faster pace, propelled by the funding from the Mariners (Old Boys) and their corporates, which has ensured that the tartan tracks are now in perfect shape for the November 14 event.
“It is most pleasing and gratifying to note that since our last visit, a lot has been done to ensure that the GCU Relays hold as scheduled. It is a most commendable feat,” Nesiama and Okpako chorused.
Still, the most assuring message was delivered by the President General Worldwide, GCUOBA, Albert Akpomudje, who not only commended the pace and quality of work at the arena, but the tremendous monetary support that has been given by the young and ancient Mariners.
“I am most grateful to this group of wonderful Old Boys for their consistent support and identification with the GCU Relays over the years” he said, adding, “still, my plea to Corporate Nigeria about the tartan tracks after almost a decade of usage, continues until it is done.”
The yearly GCU Relays is driven by the fundamental objective of reviving inter-collegiate athletics competition for national unity and progress.
Previous participants outside Delta State include Yewa College, Ilaro, Idia College, Benin and Government College, Afikpo.
