Confirming the incident to journalists in Makurdi, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), DSP Moses Yamu, stated that sporadic gunshots were heard at a beer parlour around Okpoga roundabout about 9pm on Saturday and police officers were dispatched to the scene to engage the hoodlums.
Yamu explained that in a gun duel, six persons were killed, including a police sergeant in mufti who was relaxing at the drinking joint.
“Preliminary investigation revealed that the yet-to-be-identified armed men led by one Matthew, who is still at large, were from Ollo community,” Yamu stated.
He noted that the Commissioner of Police, Ene Okon, had ordered the area commander to relocate to the troubled area, while teams of Operation Zenda, Police Mobile Force and Counter-terrorism Unit, have been drafted to the area to identify and arrest the culprits.
