The need for organisations to see the background checks as part of their processes has been emphasised. A background check is necessary as it serves as a crucial tool for eliminating fraud and wastage in organisations.

In the views of the Managing Director of Background Check International (BCI), Kola Olugbodi, a background check is a potent tool to restore sanity to corporate organisations. He said it helps to checkmate wrong hiring by ensuring employers checkmate those who could defraud organisations.

The BCI boss explained that background check is not about hiring at face value nor by what the resume of individual states, but eliminating frauds and criminal tendencies among employees.

He enjoined corporate organisations to accept background checks as a crucial tool for eliminating frauds and wastage in their systems.

Olugbodi said a major impact of Background Check International is Know Your Staff (KYS), which is not all about what prospective employees say or what they claim to be, but corroborating and verifying the claims.

KYS is also about knowing more about their staff as this ensures organisations know whether the staff has the requisite skills to secure employment.

He added: “Background check also helps ensure that some prospective staff does not have criminal records. It is also to ensure that those who claim to have work experiences have solid character and proper conduct while they were in previous employment.”

Olugbodi, who said his organisation has over 17 years of pioneering background check operations in Nigeria, had supported and saved several organisations from blind hiring, making employment decisions with empirical and statistical evidence.

According to him: “It has become highly important for corporate organisations to see the background check as a critical tool that will aid corporate hiring. In essence, a background check will save organisations from fraudulent and criminally-minded elements, who create bottlenecks.”

He allayed fears about the process by stating: “Background check is not about witch-hunting. For any staff to be verified, we advise our clients to ensure that the affected staff gives consent to the process. We counsel organisations to embark on the necessary steps that their action deserves. Everyone should be in the picture for a background check.

“There have been some cases staff taking decision to resign rather than being verified. This may be due to fraudulent activities in their previous employment. A background check is not a discrete investigation, but it is about verifying public records of institutional data about the staff. Staff can either give consent or otherwise, which means appropriate actions would be taken on verification and authentication of information provided.”
