Maritime workers confirm new secretary general

The Maritime Workers’ Union of Nigeria (MWUN) has officially appointed Erazua Oniha as the union’s Secretary General.

According to a statement by the union’s Head of Media, John Ikemefuna, his confirmation came after serving six months in an acting capacity, following the retirement of his predecessor, Felix Akingboye.

The announcement was made during a joint session of the union’s National Administrative Committee (NAC) and Central Working Committee (CWC) held recently.

Oniha, who hails from Edo State, brings with him a wealth of experience, having climbed the ranks from Assistant Secretary-General to Deputy Secretary-General, where he oversaw critical portfolios including training and research, education, and media.

Oniha holds a master’s degree from the University of Ibadan and previously served as a teacher before joining the MWUN.

His rise through the ranks, according to the statement, has been marked by a reputation for dedication, discipline, and progressive thinking.

During the meeting, the union also confirmed the appointments of two other senior officials to the position of General Secretary for their respective branches.

Olangwe Dagogo, former Organising Secretary, has been promoted as the General-Secretary of the Seamen and Water Transport Branch.

He is a mechanical engineering graduate from the University of Port Harcourt.

He has served diligently in his previous capacity and is well-regarded for his organisational acumen.
Joseph Ekwere has been confirmed as the General Secretary of the Nigeria Ports Authority (NPA) Branch of the union.
