The Chartered Institute of Taxation of Nigeria (CITN) has urged its district leaders to attain excellence by staying ahead of emerging trends, building on effective leadership traits, and continuously refining their strategies to ensure the district thrives and remains resilient in the face of future challenges.

The institute said this was pertinent as the national institute’s landscape continued to evolve. A CITN fellow and Guest Speaker, Dr Titilayo Fowokan, advised the investiture of the 19th Chairman of CITN Lagos and District Society, Ini Esau, and the inauguration of the 2024-2026 executive members.

Fowokan, who spoke on ‘Achieving Success through Effective Leadership,’ defined leadership as a social process and more about a group of people working collectively to achieve results together.

She said managing a district effectively requires a holistic approach that encompasses strategic planning, strong leadership, sound financial management, and a focus on innovation and member satisfaction.

Fowokan said in today’s world, the role of a leader transcended mere managerial duties to be the catalyst for innovation, the architect of a positive work culture, and the pillar of resilience in times of challenge.

She stressed that good leadership never stops “because is not a destination but a journey throughout the lifetime of anyone who assumes leadership roles.”

In his acceptance speech, elated Esau said his administration would strive on the legacies of the past administration to achieve the aim and objectives of the institute as laid down in its charter. He planned to embark on members’ capacity building by exploring available resources to enhance the technical capacity of members.

The new district chairman said his tenure would continue on the ‘catch them young initiative’ that aims to expose the merits of the tax profession as a career path to students and graduates.

Earlier in her valedictory speech, the immediate past Chairman of CITN Lagos and District Society, Zaynab Abdulkareem, gave a brief on how the district fared during her tenure administratively and how it met with all her financial obligations.
