Directors underscore importance of corporate governance for economic growth

Tijjani Borodo

The Chartered Institute of Directors (CIoD) Nigeria has emphasised the pivotal significance of corporate governance in driving the growth and development of the nation’s economy.

President and Chairman of Council, CIoD, Tijjani Borodo, said this ahead of the institute’s yearly directors’ conference, which has the theme: ‘Driving Nigeria’s Economic Transformation and Diversification: The Role of Corporate Governance.’

He said with the new administration, there was the need for the institute to key into the government’s transformation agenda, especially, as a leader in the advocacy for the entrenchment of good corporate governance in Nigeria.

Noting that corporate governance plays a pivotal role in steering the economy towards sustainability and efficient practices, he said it also facilitates the adaptation of ethical principles and transformation, as well as ensures the identification and retention of top talents to fuel economic growth.

Borodo, said the two days conference, beginning today, is expected to focus on key sectors on energy, digital space, human capital, agriculture and non-oil mineral sectors of the economy, by identifying their potential contribution to Nigeria’s economic transformation.

He expressed optimism that the conference would serve as a platform for stakeholders across various sectors of the Nigerian economy to foster a deeper commitment to corporate governance best practices.

Also, the National Organising Committee for the conference, Fatumata Coker, said with the expected stakeholders and selected topics, discussions and recommendations at the conference would significantly contribute to shaping policy outcomes for the nation’s economic advancement.
