Executive Chairman of Edo State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), Ozavize Salami, said the state has engaged 5,500 teachers to boost the workforce and enhance learning processes.

Salami announced in Benin that the recruitment aims to address teacher shortages and enhance teaching and learning in Edo schools.

She explained that the teachers who underwent a rigorous recruitment process would fill identified gaps in primary and junior secondary schools across the state.

She noted that 19,931 applications were received for the teaching positions, with 16,038 candidates selected for computer-based tests and interviews.

Salami added that the selected candidates, possessing the necessary skills and expertise, will work in all local government areas of the state.

“This recruitment of 5,500 personnel is part of our strategy to bridge the teacher gap in primary and junior secondary schools. It is another testament to Governor Obaseki’s unwavering commitment to delivering quality education to the children of Edo State.”

“Many of the new teachers are young and dynamic; they will revitalise the existing teaching staff. Governor Obaseki continues to implement measures that will sustain Edo’s position as a leader in educational reform in Nigeria and beyond,” she said.

Salami highlighted that over 70 per cent of EdoSTAR fellows, who were engaged as trainee teachers two years ago, have been recruited as full-time government teachers.

She said the fellows, initially on minimum wage, benefited from a recent salary increase, raising their pay from N40,000 to N70,000 in May 2024.

Salami revealed that of the 5,500 recruits, 2,500 would be permanent government teachers, while 3,000 would refill the approved EdoSTAR positions and start a new three-year fellowship program.

Also, she said 125 experienced education managers would be recruited to support and sustain the EdoBEST programme.
