Fellow, Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport (CILT), Funmilayo Loremikan has emphasised the need for gender equality in workplaces to advance results in businesses, especially in the maritime and energy sectors.

Loremikan, who serves in SERVICOM department at Nigerian Ports Authority, stated this at the women in maritime and energy awards, tagged, ‘The role of gender equality in advancing business results,’ held in Lagos.

According to her, fostering equal access to opportunity, responsibility, and resources regardless of gender, would increase the productivity of the maritime and energy sectors, thereby creating room for improvements.

Loremikan urged women in the industries to compete favourably with their male counterparts by demonstrating competency and professionalism in the workplace.

She also stressed the need for older women in the industries to be role models and mentors to the younger generation, rather than sabotaging their efforts, thereby giving room for bitterness and infighting.

She noted that opportunities abound in the workplace, but individuals must show their worth and value to be recognised, identified, and respected. She said: “The importance of gender equality in advancing business results in the maritime and energy sectors cannot be overemphasised. It is time for women to take their rightful place in the sector. There is a need for women to support ourselves, while placing merit in its rightful place and ensure that we support each other’s career growth through mentoring. This will serve as an inspiration to all professionals striving to succeed in their careers.

“It is time for women to show their worth and value to be recognised and respected and not be pushed to the background. Women, be resourceful and proactive to take charge of your career growth. Seek opportunities; they are everywhere. Demonstrate competence.”

She also called on organisations to create an enabling environment that supports gender equality, equal access to opportunities and resources, and a level playing field for all.
