The Nigerian Institute of Management (Chartered) has elected Dr Umar Musa Mustapha as its 26th President and Chairman of Council, with a mandate to advance management excellence, ethical leadership and institutional governance.
Mustapha, who succeeded Commodore Abimbola Ayuba (Rtd.), was elected alongside Professor Emmanuel Umana, Vice-Chancellor of Obong University, as Deputy President, and Lady Christie Adejoh as National Treasurer. The principal officers will steer the institute’s affairs for the next year.
The new president is the Vice Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Mentholatum Nigeria Limited and a former Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Council of the University of Ibadan.
His election comes as organisations face increasing demands for stronger corporate governance, improved management capacity, and accountability in delivering institutional and economic objectives.
With more than 40 years of leadership experience spanning the public and private sectors, Mustapha is expected to build on the institute’s existing programmes in professional development, ethical leadership and management practice.
At the University of Ibadan, where he served as Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of Council, he led institutional governance, policy reforms, and financial restructuring.
He also chaired the Kano State Committee on Public-Private Partnerships and the Manufacturers Association of Nigeria’s Manufacturing Sector Committee, while serving on the council of Al-Qalam University, Katsina.
In the private sector, Mustapha has led business transformation and expansion initiatives. At Mentholatum Nigeria Limited, he has overseen efforts to improve profitability, expand market share and strengthen the company’s competitive position in West Africa.
He previously served as Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Raleigh Nigeria Plc, where he led operational reforms and business expansion initiatives.
His professional experience also includes consultancy and research assignments with the International Monetary Fund, the World Bank, and multinational corporations, focusing on fiscal policy, economic development, energy management, and institutional transformation.
An accomplished scholar, Mustapha holds four doctoral qualifications and six master’s degrees from universities in the United Kingdom, Australia, France and Nigeria. He is a fellow of the Nigerian Institute of Management (Chartered), the Nigerian Society of Engineers, the Institute of Directors and the Nigerian Institution of Mechanical Engineers.
His involvement with NIM spans several years and includes service as Deputy President, Council Member, Executive Committee Member, Chairman of the Board of Fellows, Chairman of the Programmes Committee, Zonal Chairman and Chapter Executive.
In a statement announcing the election, NIM’s Registrar and Chief Executive, Dr Taiwo Ganiyat Olusesi, expressed confidence in the new leadership’s ability to build on the institute’s achievements and strengthen its relevance as a leading professional management body.
