Workers’ unions in the telecommunications sector have vowed to sustain their ongoing indefinite strike action until their members are no longer subjected to precarious work conditions but treated rightly and other demands are met.

The workers, under the aegis of the Private Telecommunications and Communications Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (PTECSSAN), said this when they picketed Huawei Technologies Nigeria at their Lekki head office, alleging that the care-free attitude of the company has kept the strike action lingering, with no remorse in sight.

Brandished with placards with different inscriptions and chanting solidarity songs, the workers barricaded the entrance to the office and prevented workers from gaining access to their offices for hours.

The union’s General Secretary, Okonu Abdullahi, said the union has resolved that the picketing action would be a continuous one until the company is freed of its errors- precarious working conditions it subjects its members to.

Listing about 14 of the union’s demands, Abdullahi mentioned the immediate reinstatement of the three unjustly sacked members of the union, immediate recognition of the fundamental right of the employees to freely associate with the union, and the immediate recognition of the union as a negotiating body for the employees on workers welfare among others.

He said the action would be continuous until their demands are met.

According to him, the union has done all it could for the management of the company to listen, all to no avail.

Efforts by The Guardian to reach out to the firm proved abortive as the Deputy Managing Director of the company, whom the reporter had called to get a reaction, promised to return the call with a reason that he was not able to speak where he was, but did not as at time of filing the report.
