The Executive Director and CEO of the National Film and Video Censors Board (NFVCB), Dr. Shaibu Husseini, has challenged digital platforms in the country to go beyond content distribution and address issues such as fair monetisation, intellectual property protection and audience safety.
He issued the challenge during the launch of Bebuzee, an all-in-one ‘Super App’ in Lagos. The remarks highlight the question of whether Bebuzee, as another digital platform, can offer Nigerian creators the desired economic opportunities while maintaining appropriate standards for content, privacy and user protection.
“Bebuzee is not competing with any platform; instead, it is here to dominate,” he said. “Nollywood and the creative industry have been generally dominating, but this is one step forward.”
He urged stakeholders at the event and the creative industry to be ambassadors of the App, stressing that “we need to push this project (Bebuzee), own it as a Nigerian brand and get the rest of Africa to buy into it. We gave them all their woods, from Kenya to Cameroun, Zambia and all the rest. Bebuzee is from Nigeria for Africa and indeed the world.”
Earlier in his address, Joseph Onyero, founder and CEO of Bebuzee Inc., a Miami-based company trading on the OTC market under the ticker BBUZ, said the Nigerian digital landscape has long been dominated by fragmented applications, forcing users to jump across dozens of platforms for social networking, e-commerce, and entertainment.
However, that paradigm is shifting with the entrance of Bebuzee into the Nigerian digital landscape. Onyero stated that the App is designed as an integrated all-in-one digital ecosystem, adding that the platform aims to rewrite the rules of digital engagement, offering a dedicated economic lifeline for Nigerian and African youths, filmmakers, and creatives.
According to him, the multi-purpose App was developed to position Nigeria as a major launchpad for its wider African expansion. He noted that unlike conventional social-media platforms that primarily focus on content sharing and networking, Bebuzee brings several services into one digital ecosystem.
“Its features include social networking and messaging, video sharing and streaming, shopping, payments, property search, food delivery, ride-hailing and access to local professionals,” Onyero said.
He added that the platform is also placing the creative economy at the centre of its Nigerian strategy. “Bebuzee is developed partly to address concerns over how African content creators are compensated by existing digital platforms.”
