The Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, has commissioned newly constructed accommodation blocks for personnel at the 6 Division Nigerian Army, Port Harcourt, underscoring the Nigerian Army’s renewed commitment to improving the welfare and living conditions of its troops.
Speaking during the commissioning ceremony on Friday, July 3, 2026, the Army Chief said the provision of decent, secure and conducive accommodation remains a key pillar of the Army’s “Soldier First” culture, stressing that personnel welfare is essential to operational effectiveness.
According to Lieutenant General Shaibu, better housing for soldiers and their families will boost morale, enhance operational readiness and improve administrative efficiency, enabling troops to carry out their constitutional responsibilities more effectively.
He noted that a well-motivated and adequately cared-for soldier is better equipped to defend Nigeria’s territorial integrity and respond swiftly to evolving security threats, adding that sustained investment in personnel welfare is critical to building a professional, resilient and combat-ready Nigerian Army.
The COAS also commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, for his continued support to the Nigerian Army through the provision of resources that have strengthened troop welfare, improved operational capacity and reinforced the military’s ability to safeguard national security.
The commissioning of the new accommodation blocks is part of ongoing efforts by the Nigerian Army to enhance the welfare of its personnel while sustaining operational excellence across the country.
