A former councillor in Benue State, Daniel Ujah, has been remanded in custody after he was accused of allegedly attacking a woman and pushing her into a fire during a confrontation in Ohimini Local Government Area.

Ujah, 43, who served as councillor representing Awume-Icho Ward, was ordered to be remanded at the Otukpo Correctional Centre by the Upper Area Court 2 in Otukpo.

He is facing charges including criminal trespass, intimidation, criminal force and assault, causing grievous hurt, as well as attempted culpable homicide.

The case followed a petition reportedly filed by Rebecca Adole at the Area Commander’s Office of the Nigeria Police in Otukpo.

According to the First Information Report presented before the court, the alleged incident occurred on August 28, 2026, when Ujah reportedly entered the compound of Adole’s mother, Amina Iduh, at Akwutulo, Awume.

The police alleged that the former councillor assaulted the woman and pushed her into a fire, leaving her with injuries to her buttocks while her clothes were burnt.

Following the incident, the woman was reportedly taken to a hospital in Onyagede, Ohimini Local Government Area, where she is receiving treatment.

The police further alleged that Ujah threatened to kill the woman and claimed that nobody would be able to stop him.

When the matter came up for mention on Wednesday, Ujah pleaded not guilty to all the charges.

His lawyer, Rev. O. Simon, who appeared on his behalf, applied for bail, but the prosecution, represented by Inspector Nancy Alechenu, opposed the application.

After hearing the submissions, the presiding magistrate, Hasia Garuba, ordered that Ujah remain in custody at the Otukpo Correctional Centre pending further proceedings.

The court subsequently adjourned the case until September 22, 2026, for further mention.

Ujah’s remand is not a conviction, and the allegations against him remain to be determined by the court.
