The Kebbi State Customs Area Command has handed over 2,820 donkey skins it seized from smugglers to the Nigeria Agricultural Quarantine Service in the state.

Addressing a press conference, yesterday, at the command headquarters, Kebbi State Custom Controller, Joe Attah, said that the smugglers were arrested around Bahindi Dogon Rimi waterside in Bagudo Local Council.

He explained that the 2,820 donkey skins was valued at N42m, while the donkey skins fall under schedule 6 of common external tariff (2022-2026) exportation of which is prohibited.

“They were arrested when they were trying to smuggle out the items.” He said that the level of poaching resulting in the slaughtering of 2820 donkeys was not acceptable.

“Nigeria is a signatory to a multilateral convention on international trade on endangered species flora and fauna which makes trading of donkey skins illegal.”

Responding, the Deputy Controller, Nigeria Agricultural Quarantine Service, Idris Dankata, thanked the Nigeria Customs Service for collaborating with his agency.
