The Federal Mortgage Bank of Nigeria, FMBN, has stated that 6,911 affordable housing units have been delivered, representing 96 percent of its annual target of 7,200 homes under the 2025 Presidential and Ministerial Deliverables.
During the period under review, the Bank said, over ₦208 billion in housing and mortgage loans was approved, with over ₦120 billion disbursed to support housing construction, mortgage financing, home renovation, cooperative housing, and Rent-to-Own initiatives.
Speaking at 2026 World Habitat Day and World Cities Day in Abuja, its Managing Director, Shehu Usman Osidi asserted that as Nigeria’s foremost mortgage institution and the custodian of the National Housing Fund (NHF), we are working with our slogan and belief that “Everyone Deserves a Home”.
Osidi explained that as part of the global observance of Urban October, this month long initiative by UN Habitat provides an opportunity for us to reflect on the challenges and opportunities of rapid urbanisation, and recommit ourselves to building resilient, inclusive, and sustainable cities.
The Managing Director further said, “In line with this belief, the Bank has, since its inception, facilitated the creation of thousands of mortgages for Nigerians, providing access to homeownership with dignity, and to ensure that every Nigerian has access to decent and affordable housing.
He therefore commended the Housing Ministry for its leadership in driving the national housing agenda and for aligning Nigeria with the global call of United Nations Habitat to reflect on the challenges and opportunities of rapid urbanisation.
“We are continuously expanding and refining our interventions to respond to the changing needs of our people. From the Rent-to-Own Scheme to Home Renovation Loans, from the NHF Diaspora Mortgage Loan to our Non-Interest Mortgage Financing initiatives.”
According to Osidi, the main objective remains the same: to broaden the pathways through which Nigerians can access decent and affordable housing. These achievements underscore the Bank’s enduring role as a reliable, transparent, and inclusive conduit for delivering affordable housing to Nigerians.
He argued that in line with the Bank’s commitment to inclusivity, we have formally launched the Diaspora NHF Mortgage Loan, designed to enable Nigerians abroad to invest in affordable housing back home, saying we will continue to work with others to expand access to housing finance and support the delivery of affordable homes.
“We will commence this month the NonInterest Mortgage Product, designed to meet the needs of contributors who prefer ethical financing options as well as the Rent Assistance Product, a landmark initiative that will ease the burden of rent payments for federal civil servants as a bridge towards eventual homeownership.”
