United Bank for Africa (UBA) Plc has launched an online account opening platform that allows customers to open bank accounts entirely digitally, including those in the diaspora. The development aims to simplify access to banking services by removing the need for physical branch visits and paperwork.
The platform accommodates both Naira and Diaspora accounts and offers multiple language options. Prospective customers can complete the process on computers, tablets, or smartphones, ensuring a consistent experience across devices.
According to UBA, the platform is compliant with the Nigeria Data Protection Act (NDPA) and the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), providing a framework for data privacy and security for both local and international users.
The account opening process incorporates digital KYC, document uploads, facial verification, OTP confirmation, and digital signatures. Customers receive their account numbers immediately upon completing the process.
Shamsideen Fashola, Group Head, Retail and Digital Banking, said the platform reflects the bank’s goal of making financial services more accessible. “Our new Instant Account Opening platform reflects this commitment by removing traditional barriers and making it easy for anyone — whether on the continent or in the diaspora — to open an account in minutes,” he said.
Alero Ladipo, Group Head, Brand, Marketing and Corporate Communication, said the initiative combines regulatory compliance with digital convenience, ensuring a smooth experience for retail customers.
UBA has operations in 20 African countries and maintains a presence in the United Kingdom, United States, France, and the United Arab Emirates. The bank serves over 50 million customers worldwide and provides a range of retail, commercial, and institutional banking services.
