MTN recreates GSM experience in early 2000s

MTN Nigeria

MTN Nigeria is taking Nigerians back to the early days of mobile communication with a week-long immersive experience designed to recreate the technology, memories and moments that marked the beginning of GSM connectivity in the country.

The MTN Y’ello Street Experience, which opened on August 10 and runs until August 17, is being held at MTN Plaza on Awolowo Road, Ikoyi, Lagos, as part of activities marking the company’s 25 years of connection with Nigerians.

The experience takes visitors through different eras of Nigeria’s communication journey, offering a glimpse of a period when mobile phones were still a novelty, phone calls carried greater significance and SMS represented a major technological breakthrough.

It also recreates the contrast between that period and the highly-connected environment Nigerians now experience, where mobile phones have become central to business, entertainment, banking, education, social interaction and access to information.

The exhibition provides visitors with an opportunity to reconnect with memories of their first mobile phones and early experiences with mobile connectivity. Parents can identify devices they once used, while younger Nigerians can discover how different communication was before smartphones, social media and instant messaging became part of everyday life.

One participant described the experience as a reminder of “how far we have come,” noting that activities that were once considered remarkable have now become part of everyday life.

Another visitor said the experience provided a different perspective on technology, particularly by showing how deeply mobile connectivity has become woven into the daily routines of Nigerians.

Beyond the nostalgia, the experience highlights the rapid transformation of technology over the past 25 years. What began largely as a means of making calls and sending text messages has evolved into a gateway to several aspects of everyday life.

The organisers said the experience was designed to allow visitors to revisit the technology, moments and memories that have shaped communication in Nigeria over the past quarter of a century.

For Nigerians who experienced the early days of mobile connectivity, the exhibition offers an opportunity to revisit a defining period, while younger visitors can see how significantly communication has changed.

As MTN marks 25 years of connection with Nigerians, the experience presents the company’s history alongside a broader reflection of Nigeria’s own journey through 25 years of technological change.
