Stock market index rises marginally by 0.1%

Despite price losses that outweighed gains, equity transactions on the Nigerian Stock Exchange closed on a positive note yesterday, as most highly capitalised stocks recorded price appreciation, causing the All-share index to increase marginally by 0.1 per cent.

Specifically at the close of transactions yesterday, Market capitalisation of listed equities inched up marginally by N2 billion or 0.016 per cent to N12.614 trillion, from N12.612 trillion reported the previous day. The All-share index rose to 36645.65 points from 36641.52 traded on Wednesday.

Investors traded 140.876 million shares worth N1.722 billion in 4159 deals against 198.634 million shares worth N2.936 billion exchanged hands the previous day in 3542 deals

International Breweries led 18 others on the gainers’ chart with N2.21 kobo to close at N46.52 per share. Stanbic IBTC followed with a gain of N1.10 kobo to close at N46.52 per share.

GlaxoSmithKline increased by N0.85 kobo to close at N24.00 per share. Cadbury Nigeria Plc grew by N0.30 kobo to close at N10.50 per share. Nestle Nigeria Plc appreciated by N0.27 kobo to close at N1200.27 kobo.

BOC Gases gained 0.18 kobo to close at N3.96 per share. Fidson added 0.17 kobo to close at N3.59 per share. Dangote Sugar Refinery garnered 0.16 kobo to close at N14.41 per share. Custodian & Allied insurance appreciated by 0.11 kobo to close at N3.78 per share. Union Bank also added 0.08 kobo to close at N6.11 per share.

Forte Oil Plc recorded the highest loss, declining by N2.00 to close atN46.00 per share while Nigerian Breweries trailed with N0.51 kobo to close at N161.99 per share.

Total Nigeria Plc fell by N0.41 kobo to close at N245.00, United Bank for Africa (UBA) down by N0.21 kobo to close at N8.85 kobo, Mansard Insurance declined by N0.12 kobo to close at N 2.36 kobo.

C&I Leasing dropped 0.09 kobo to close at N1.81 per share. Fidelity Bank shed 0.07 kobo to close at N1.41 per share.

Nigerian Aviation Handling Company depreciated by 0.05 kobo to close at N3.35 per share.

Further analysis of transactions for the day showed that United Bank for Africa was the toast of investors during the day, trading 30.645 million shares valued at N275.036 million.

Sterling Bank followed with 15.720 million shares valued at N15.667 million, GTBank traded 15.273 million shares valued at N636.896 million, Zenith International Bank sold 14.036 million shares worth N368.500 million, while Skye Bank exchanged 9.102 million shares valued at N4.678 million.
