Following the intervention of the state governor, Uba Sani, the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Kaduna State University (KASU) chapter, has suspended the strike action embarked upon some days ago.

The union commended Governor Sani for his swift intervention and leadership in resolving the issues that led to the strike action.

They said the governor’s intervention is a deviation from the dark days of the past when members were victimized for participating in lawful strike actions.

Meanwhile, in a statement titled “Suspension of Strike Action” and signed by the Chairperson of ASUU-KASU, Dr. Peter Adamu, on Monday, the lecturers pointed out that “the congress of the Academic Staff Union of Universities, Kaduna State University chapter, met on Saturday, 22nd February 2025, considered and deliberated on the offers from the Kaduna State Government,” adding that “after extensive deliberations, congress agreed to suspend the strike action, subject to the signing of an agreement between the government and the union.”

According to the statement, in the course of deliberations, the government demonstrated goodwill in resolving the impasse by immediately releasing funds to pay 60 percent of the September 2017 withheld salaries and SIWES supervision allowance for five sessions.

He added, “The government has also agreed to a timeline for the payment of the five (5) months’ withheld salaries from May to September 2022, promotion arrears, Earned Academic Allowance (EAA), pension remittance (2009 to 2019), death benefits, and Group Life Assurance. The government also showed commitment to implementation.

“Government also showed commitment to the implementation of the wage award and granting of autonomy to the university.

“We want to use this opportunity to specially thank His Excellency, the Governor of Kaduna State, Senator Uba Sani, for his swift intervention and leadership in resolving the issues that led to the strike action.

This is indeed a deviation from the dark days of the past when members were victimized for participating in lawful strike actions.

“We appreciate the university management, Commissioner of Education, Commissioner of Sports, the Principal Private Secretary (PPS) to the Governor, and other stakeholders for their roles in ensuring a quick resolution of the impasse.

We also thank our students and parents for their understanding and support.

“Special thanks go to our members for their unalloyed and unwavering solidarity and determination during the strike action.

“Having received approval from NEC, the union calls on all academic staff to resume their duties and continue rendering invaluable services to the university community.”
