A lecturer in the Electrical Engineering Department at Rivers State University (RSU), Prof Christopher Ahiakwo, has urged the Federal Government to invest in renewable energy to tackle Nigeria’s persistent power outages.
He emphasised the vast potential of solar energy, citing Israel’s successful adoption of solar power during the day, with conventional electricity used only at night.
Ahiakwo, who made the call at RSU’s second valedictory lecture and book launch, noted that Nigeria, rich in renewable energy resources, is yet to tap into its full potentials to address power challenges.
He highlighted the need for Nigeria to harness its renewable energy resources to ensure a stable and sustainable power supply. He noted that by investing in renewable energy, Nigeria can reduce its reliance on conventional electricity and mitigate the persistent issue of power outages.
The lecture highlighted the need for Nigeria to harness its renewable energy resources to ensure a stable and sustainable power supply. He said: “The government must invest more in renewable energy to get it right. We are endowed with different sources of energy, that is why I decided to do a research on the nature of power system and talents in renewable energy that the country can harness to improve the system.”
In his valedictory lecture, titled: “The contrasting paths of teacher candle and tire fire,” Ahiakwo emphasised the crucial role of educators in shaping students’ lives.
He encouraged teachers to be selfless and motivated by a genuine desire to positively impact their students. The Vice Chancellor, Prof Nlerum Okogbule, urged lecturers to embody the selfless qualities of the “teacher candle.”
