In commemoration of this year’s Global Education Week (GEW), BIC has strengthened its commitment to inclusive education in Nigeria with the handing over of three newly renovated solar-powered classrooms to Sari-Iganmu Inclusive School in Lagos.
The upgraded facilities, delivered in partnership with Raising Star Africa Foundation (RSAF), formed part of the brand’s commitment to improve learning conditions for children with special needs.
BIC Nigeria General Manager, Anthony Amahwe, described the project as a purposeful milestone that reflects the company’s dedication to creating inspiring and accessible learning environments for special needs children.
Amahwe said the initiative was in line with their global ambition to enhance learning conditions for 250 million students by the end of 2025, noting that similar education-focused activities are taking place across over 100 BIC markets.
Amahwe stated that the renovated classrooms were redesigned to be fully accessible and powered by renewable energy to ensure uninterrupted learning.
He added that the project was designed based on their belief that special needs children should learn in spaces that are creative, safe and free from disruption.
The upgrade includes solar installations, new chairs and tables, whiteboards, smart boards, fresh paint and modern learning tools. A creative colouring workshop was held for pupils and writing materials were donated to support classroom activities and promote self-expression.
While lauding the organisation for the gesture, the Education Secretary, Apapa Local Government Education Authority, Mrs. Oluwatoyin Olawepo, described the intervention as one of the most impactful contributions the school has received.
She expressed gratitude to RSAF for facilitating the project and said the new infrastructure had solved long-standing challenges, especially the lack of electricity that had made many learning tools unusable.
Founder, RSAF, Michael Showunmi, said the gesture would significantly improve access to quality education for children requiring additional learning support and create a more inclusive school ecosystem.
Showunmi noted that they have reached over 20,000 children across Nigeria and renovated eight inclusive schools in Lagos, with Sari-Iganmu being the second executed in partnership with BIC.
The Head teacher, Oladeji Modupe, said the renovation will make learning more conducive and effective for pupils. BIC also recognised and rewarded two of the school’s longest-serving teachers with one million naira each in appreciation of their years of dedication and service.
The gesture, the company said, is to emphasise its belief in celebrating educators who shape the nation’s future.
