Nigeria’s Ambassador to Hungary, Abass Braimah, has called for an increase in scholarship slots allocated to Nigerian students under the Stipendium Hungaricum Scholarship Programme.
Braimah made the appeal on Tuesday, October 13, during a working visit to the headquarters of Tempus Public Foundation in Budapest, the Hungarian capital. He was accompanied by the Deputy Head of Mission and Minister Plenipotentiary, Vivienne Ekwora Ogonyi.
The delegation was received by the Director-General of Tempus Public Foundation, Péter Tordai, and the Director of Study in Hungary, Orsolya Jánosik.
The meeting focused on strengthening educational cooperation between Nigeria and Hungary, with particular attention to the Stipendium Hungaricum programme, which provides international scholarship opportunities for students to study at Hungarian universities.
During the meeting, Braimah said the current allocation of 50 scholarship slots for Nigeria was too small, considering the country’s population and the number of students who could benefit from international education opportunities.
He urged the foundation to consider increasing Nigeria’s allocation to give more qualified students access to the programme.
The proposed increase would expand opportunities for Nigerian students seeking to pursue higher education in Hungary. However, no new allocation was announced during the visit.
Braimah also encouraged eligible Nigerians to take advantage of the scholarship programme when applications open in November 2026.
The Stipendium Hungaricum Scholarship Programme is part of Hungary’s efforts to promote international educational cooperation by providing opportunities for foreign students to study in the country. For Nigerian applicants, the programme offers a route to access higher education at participating Hungarian institutions.
An increase in Nigeria’s allocation would potentially widen access to the programme, particularly for qualified applicants who may otherwise be unable to pursue international education because of financial constraints.
The discussions also provided an opportunity for Nigerian and Hungarian representatives to explore ways to strengthen cooperation in education and build on existing academic links between both countries.
Nigeria and Hungary have continued to engage through diplomatic and educational channels, with scholarship opportunities serving as one avenue for promoting exchanges between their citizens.
The ambassador’s visit is part of Nigerian Embassy’s broader efforts to deepen bilateral relations with Hungary and support Nigerians studying in the European country.
The embassy also urged eligible Nigerians to prepare for the next application window, expected to open in November, and consider the opportunities available through the programme.
