To educate young people on online safety, five Rotary Clubs under District 9110, recently organised a seminar for students across 12 schools in Lagos.
The students, drawn from Isheri Senior Grammar School, Ijeshatedo Senior Grammar School, Holy Saviour College, and Ansar-ud-deen Grammar School, among others, benefitted from basic education and literacy seminar themed: “Staying in the loop, not in trouble online safety tips.”
The clubs include Rotary Club of Akowonjo, Rotary Club of Ikeja-South, Rotary Club of Isolo, Rotary Club of Lagos Palmgrove Estate and Rotary Club of Okota.
At the seminar, students were cautioned on their activities online, while parents were charged to always be inquisitive and monitor their wards.
Teachers were also enjoined to be more vigilant, while the government was called upon to legislate on cyber security.
Speaking on behalf of others, President of the Rotary Club of Lagos Palmgrove Estate, Omoye Evbota, said the purpose of the collaboration was to ensure that students do not fall prey to the numerous dangers online.
Evbota explained that the project was to foster a spirit of friendship among the students across the various schools, so that they’ll know themselves better as they interact.
She said the topic was chosen to educate the children who are always online without knowing the inherent dangers.
The guest speaker, Olamide Adeneye, reminded the students that as they enjoy their time online, they should be cautious of the negative sides and recognise red flags to play safe.
She identified some of the negative aspects of online activities to include cyber bullying and inappropriate content, while she enumerated the safety tips as safe, meet, do not accept, reliable and tell, with the acronym SMART.
