
• As institution matriculates 171 students
Founder, Thomas Adewumi University (TAU), Oko, Kwara State, Dr. Johnson Adewumi, has called on the Federal Government to encourage players in the private education sub-sector to do more by providing support.
Speaking at the third matriculation ceremony of TAU, Adewumi said those who invest in education, either at secondary or tertiary level, did not do so primarily for profit.
He described educationists as nation builders, saying they have the option of investing in other sectors but chose to invest in human capital development.
He said: “There is no encouragement for private sector investors in education. It is imperative for the government to support them.”
Adewumi also lauded the National Universities Commission (NUC) for working hard to maintain the standard of university education in the country.
While urging the new students to be law abiding, the TAU founder stressed the need to shun acts capable of causing a breach of peace.
Speaking at the event, Kwara State Governor, AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, lauded the pace of academic and infrastructural development in the school, describing it as the fastest growing private institution in the country.
The governor said: “As a lover of education, I take a keen interest in monitoring the progress of all tertiary institutions in our state and can boldly say that TAU is one of the fastest growing private institutions in the country.
The Vice Chancellor, Prof. Francisca Oladipo, said as a young institution, they are currently changing the face of teaching and learning by introducing 21th century skills.
The VC also disclosed that in addition to the regular programme of study, TAU has introduced a requirement of two industry-based certifications minimum, which must be completed before graduation. Chairman, Parents Association, Prof. Gbenga Ibileye, lauded TAU for its sterling achievements within one year.
