President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has transmitted the National Senior Secondary Education Commission (Amendment) Bill, 2026 to the Senate, seeking its expeditious consideration and passage as part of efforts to strengthen the administration and governance of public senior secondary education in Nigeria.
The President’s request was conveyed in a letter read during Thursday’s plenary by the President of the Senate, Senator Godswill Akpabio.
In the letter, Tinubu informed the Senate that the proposed amendment bill was approved by the Federal Executive Council (FEC) at its meeting held on April 30, 2026.
According to the President, the legislation is designed to enhance the administration, coordination and governance of public senior secondary education across the country in line with his administration’s education reform agenda.
“The purpose of the bill is to strengthen the administration and governance of public senior secondary education in Nigeria,” the President stated.
He added that the proposed legislation aligns with the Federal Government’s commitment to building stronger educational institutions in the national interest.
“In consequence of the above, and in line with the desire of this administration to strengthen educational institutions in the national interest, the National Senior Secondary Education Commission (Amendment) Bill, 2026, is hereby forwarded for legislative action by the National Assembly,” the letter read.
Tinubu appealed to lawmakers to accord the bill speedy legislative consideration.
“While it is my hope that the Senate will consider the bill and grant it expeditious passage, please accept, Distinguished Senate President, the assurances of my highest consideration and personal regards,” he wrote.
After reading the communication, Senate President Akpabio referred the bill to the Senate Committee on Rules and Business for legislative processing.
He directed the committee to list the bill for further legislative action and report back to the Senate within one week.
