Two Nigerians win SSP Fellowship award for communication professionals

Two Nigerian scholars, Omorodion Okuonghae and Nosakhare Okuonghae, have been named among recipients of the prestigious Society for Scholarly Publishing (SSP) Fellowship, a programme that recognises communication professionals who have demonstrated exceptional promise and dedication in their work.

The duo were recognised at the 47th yearly meeting of the society in Baltimore, Maryland, United States. The SSP Fellowship provides mentorship, networking, and professional development opportunities to a select group of emerging leaders from around the world. This year, 12 individuals from diverse academic and professional backgrounds were recognised across the world.

The awardees were recognised for their research and scholarly communication work at the intersection of Artificial Intelligence (AI), digital librarianship, research communication, and open scholarship.

Both recipients are currently advancing research that combines AI, information literacy, usability, and accessibility for visually impaired users within digital libraries and knowledge repositories.

The programme also offered travel support to fellowship recipients to attend the SSP yearly meeting, a year-long complementary membership and mentorship, as well as opportunities to join professional committees and engage in projects.

This recognition marks another milestone in the growing presence of African scholars in the global scholarly communication landscape, emphasising the continent’s contributions to innovation and diversity in the field.
