Enugu State government says it is recruiting 2,000 primary school teachers to boost standards in its primary school system, and generally enhance teaching and learning in the state.

The state Commissioner for Information, Dr. Godwin Udeuhele, made the disclosure after a recent meeting of the State Executive Council. According to the commissioner, those to be employed must have a minimum qualification of National Certificate in Education (NCE), from recognised institutions.

“This recruitment must reflect at least 100 persons each from the 17 local government areas of the state, and should be evenly spread across the 260 electoral wards in the state,” he said, adding that the process has already begun and would be completed before the next academic session kicks off.

He also informed that the exco approved the sack of 16 out of the 17 local government education secretaries for poor performances, which he said have constituted a drawback to good governance in the state.

Udeuhele said the council took far-reaching decisions including the ratification of the recommendation of a probe carried out by the State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), which recommended the sack of 16 of the 17education secretaries. The only one not affected from Awgu local council was appointed last June.

The commissioner explained that the termination of the appointment became necessary in order to inject fresh ideas and impetus into the administration’s resolve to enhance basic education in the state.

While pointing out that the sacked secretaries no longer had the zeal to drive basic education in the state to the desired height, the commissioner explained, “The termination of appointment of the local government education secretaries, with the exception of that of Awgu is to enhance and strengthen development of basic education in the state.”

The council accused the sacked officers of practices inimical to the desired growth in the basic education system, adding that they connived with the past local government chairmen to bring the system down, especially in perpetrating illegalities.
