AMREC, CEADESE empower farmers on poultry, fish farming

The Agricultural Media Resources and Extension Centre (AMREC) has empowered over 150 farmers and youths in Iwoye Ketu and environs in Ogun State, with skills in Poultry and Fish Farming.

The empowerment, in collaboration with the Centre of Excellence in Agricultural Development and Sustainable Environment (CEADESE), Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta (FUNAAB), tagged: “International Short Course and Capacity Building on Integrated Agricultural Production and Management,” had about 30 percent of its participants drawn from the neighbouring Republic of Benin.

In his opening remark, the Vice Chancellor, Professor Kolawole Salako, represented by the Deputy Vice Chancellor, Development, Professor Lateef Sanni charged participants to take advantage of the Training to acquire more skills in poultry and fish farming, with a view to improving their socio-economic status, as well as contribute their quota to the agricultural development and food production in their respective countries.

Earlier, in her welcome address, Director of AMREC, Prof. Dorcas Adegbite appreciated the Alaye of Iwoye Ketu, Oba Joel Ademola, for his cooperation, hospitality and provision of an enabling environment for the training.

Also, the Director CEADESE, Prof. Olukayode Akinyemi further admonished the participants to avail themselves of the great opportunities, as well as to share the knowledge acquired with other farmers and stakeholders in their communities.

A Poultry housing unit stocked with 100 day-old chicks, bags of poultry feed and other materials needed to raise the birds to table size, two fish tanks stocked with 150 juveniles, bag of fish feed and other items were presented to the Community.

Responding, the monarch, Oba Ademola thanked AMREC, CEADESE and other stakeholders for choosing the community as the venue for the empowerment programme, which he said would improve the economic status, boost agricultural production and alleviate food security in their community and by extension the nation, at large.

The former Chairman, Imeko Afon Local Government, Hon. Durojaiye Asipa on behalf of participants also lauded the organisers and sponsors of the programme for the gesture, assuring them of the full cooperation and commitment of all the participants.

Topics covered during the training include: Overview of Poultry Production; Management of Broiler Chicken; Health Management in Broiler Chicken; and Broiler Chicken Products and Marketing, among others.
