Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State has reassured that education will continue to be a major stake in THEMES agenda of his administration to improve the learning outcomes of students in public schools.
Sanwo-Olu said his government would continue to improve on the ambiance of learning in public schools to bring out the best in students across the state.
He gave the assurance while receiving the One-Day Governor, Miss Eniola Ajala, winner of the 2018 New Era Spelling Bee Competition and her cabinet members at the Lagos House, Ikeja.
He said the competition is about excellence to encourage students and the youth population in the state.
Sanwo-Olu urged students in various schools not to relent on their oars to be the best and committed to reach their goals.
While applauding Ajala for demonstrating confidence, knowledge, eloquence, and pride, the governor admonished her and others to be steadfast and not allow the little feats achieved to get to their heads.
He promised to fulfill the requests made by the One Day Governor, which included rewards for teachers and principals as well as infrastructural improvement in schools.
Sanwo-Olu also lauded Senator Oluremi Tinubu, founder of New Era Foundation, for initiating a spelling bee competition.
He said the competition, which started some 20 years ago, is not about race or tribe, but an excellent platform available to students of public schools in the state.
At the extraordinary Executive Council meeting with her cabinet members, the one-day governor thanked Sanwo-Olu’s administration for the honour bestowed on winners of school competitions.
She commended his administration’s THEMES agenda and the efforts of the governor in handling the COVID-19 pandemic.
Ajala enjoined students to be focused, determined, prayerful, and committed in order to overcome the challenges of life.
She appealed to the governor to provide more infrastructure in schools that produced winners, adding that her parents, who she commended for bringing her up properly, should also be rewarded by the state government.
Director-General, Office of Education Quality Assurance, Abiola Seriki-Ayeni, said winners would be sponsored on a tour programme to Finland.
Cabinet members of the One Day Governor, who is a student of Lafiaji Senior High School, Lagos Island were Miss Grace Ikhariale of TinCan Island Senior High School, Tolu (Deputy Governor); Oluwatosin Akinbodewa of Iworo Ajido Senior Secondary School, Badagry (Speaker); Miss Eunice Adedotun of Agbede Senior School, Ikorodu (Commissioner for Education) and Master Ekene Ezeunala of Meiran Community High School (Chairman, House Committee on Education).
