Hyremoto targets Nigeria’s car rental market with driver-inclusive booking platform

Hyremoto Nigeria, founded by Deji Ade-Oni, is developing a platform connecting vehicle owners, drivers and customers seeking flexible car bookings.

For many Nigerians, owning a car has meant more than convenience. It can stand for independence, security and status, and the freedom to move without depending on public transport.

The economics of ownership, however, are changing. A vehicle is expensive to buy, maintain, insure, and fuel, and for many owners it spends much of its life parked. At the same time, there are Nigerians who need a car for only a few days, a week or a particular occasion, and have no wish to own one.

Hyremoto Nigeria Limited sees an opportunity between those two realities.

Founded by Deji Ade-Oni, who spent almost two decades in the United States before turning his attention to Nigeria’s mobility sector, Hyremoto is building a platform that connects vehicle owners, verified drivers and customers.

Ride-hailing has already shifted how many Nigerians think about transport, from a car you own to a ride you request. Hyremoto starts from a different point: some needs are not single trips.

A family home for the holidays, a wedding guest travelling to another state and a visiting executive with a week of meetings all need a vehicle for a period of time, not a ride from A to B. Under Hyremoto’s model, customers book a car together with a driver for as long as they need it, whether that’s an afternoon, a weekend or a whole stay.

It is a modest idea, but it points to a wider change: access to a car becoming something you can arrange when you need it, with ownership no longer the only way to have one.

The clearest example is the Nigerian diaspora. Each year, people living in the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada and Europe return home for weddings, family visits, business and the December holidays.

For many, arranging transport from abroad is a patchwork of relatives, informal drivers, rental cars and multiple app rides. The difficulty is less about finding a ride than about arranging something dependable for the length of a stay.

Hyremoto lets them arrange a vehicle and a verified driver around the trip rather than around individual journeys. The company is based in Lagos, and the platform currently covers Lagos, Abuja, Port Harcourt and Kano.

Handing over a car, or getting into one, involves trust on both sides. That is arguably the hardest part of any model that moves beyond conventional rentals, and Hyremoto’s answer is to attach a verified driver to every vehicle. The driver can be one the owner nominates or the owner themselves.

The company says it verifies each host and checks vehicle documentation and condition before a car is listed. Drivers go through identity and eligibility checks, and customers are required to hold a verified account and provide valid identification. Insurance, claims management and safety systems are being built into its operations.

How well those systems perform when something goes wrong is the real test of any such platform.

Ade-Oni said returning to Nigeria changed how he saw the problem.

“I spent almost two decades in America, and coming back to Nigeria gave me a different perspective,” he said. “I could see the progress that technology had brought to transportation, but I could also see areas where the Nigerian market needed a more localised solution.”

The company says, however, that its approach is not to copy an established international model but to build around local conditions, from payment systems and vehicle ownership patterns to driver relationships, security concerns and the needs of Nigerians living abroad.

His background is relevant here. Ade-Oni built his career in the oil and gas industry, a sector where operational efficiency, safety, compliance and robust systems are critical- the same disciplines a platform that handles other people’s vehicles has to take seriously.

Technology is the easy part of this. An app can take bookings, but it cannot, on its own, make a transaction safe.

What it can do is make verification, onboarding and coordination consistent. Hosts create an account on Hyremoto’s host platform, submit their vehicle with photographs and complete the onboarding process before a car is listed. The platform becomes a way of organising trust at scale, with the technology working as a means of doing so rather than as the proposition itself.

There is an economic argument beneath the model. A privately owned car is a significant asset that often produces nothing for most of the day. For owners who would rather not drive it themselves, Hyremoto offers a way to earn from it. For professional drivers, it offers another source of work.

Hyremoto launched in August 2026 and is onboarding vehicles, hosts and drivers across its four cities. The task now is growing the network of cars and customers together, and the December travel season, when many Nigerians abroad return home, will be its first major window.

If the model works, it suggests a change in the question Nigerians ask about getting around. Beyond “how do I get a ride?” there is a second one: how do I get reliable access to a car and a driver I trust, for as long as I need one?

For the people who make that trip home every December, that may be the more useful question.
