A multiple auto crash occurred at Cele-Bus Stop along the Apapa-Oshodi Expressway recently, resulting in the death of one person and many others injured.
The accident was caused by commercial bus drivers picking passengers in the middle of a major expressway.
The incident involved a container-laden truck and seven other vehicles according to Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA). This is not the first time an accident caused by commercial vehicles picking passengers on the road will be occurring within the spot. Most times, the incidents are usually fatal.
Also, similar accidents often occur at Iyana-Isolo and Five-Star bus stops along the same route. Surprising, there are usually LASTMA officers within the accident spots, especially at Cele Bus Stop, but rather than rein in on the commercial bus drivers not to pick passengers on the road and penalise them for flouting traffic rules, the traffic officers usually feel unperturbed.
When The Guardian visited the scene, some of the bus drivers popularly known as danfo drivers, said they do not use service lane because the passengers are usually on the fast lane of expressway.
Another bus driver, Emeka Nnamdi, said reason bus drivers do not use service lane is because of the slow traffic on the service lane. According to him: “If I load my bus in Oshodi, while going to Mile 2, using service lane will be a waste of time for me.”
Also commenting, Sunday Okonkwo, said LASTMA officials and other traffic officers should mark the areas where the accidents occur regularly and increase their presence there.
A passenger, Mrs. Eunice Bakare, said there is need for government to create a major bus terminal at Cele-Bus Stop to reduce accidents because it is one of the major bus stops in Lagos.
