Zakat and Sadaqat Foundation donates food items to widows, orphans in Edo

The Zakat and Sadaqat Foundation on Tuesday gave succour to the needy in the society particularly widows and orphans in Edo State. The gesture is amid at giving hope despite Nigeria’ s security and socio-economic challenges.

The Edo State Admin Officer, Mallam Abdul-Rasheed Jatto made the presentation of the food items and cash donation to thirty widows. Presenting the first round of the Foundation’s annual Ramadan package for widows and orphans, Jatto said the food items distributed include rice, beans, garri, palm and vegetable oils as well as 5,000 naira cash.

The admin officer also stressed the importance of taking care of the orphans in our midst, adding that the ‘demographic is large and should not be overlooked if we are to achieve the SDGs’.

In his remarks, Executive Director of the foundation, Prince Sulaiman Olagunju, noted that this years edition is the third in the series, adding that,”the idea is while most families are able to provide for their collective need, the widows and orphans in our midst who have lost their breadwinners, should not be left behind.

“This year, the foundation is targeting to reach 1,000 widows. And the money is raised via a minimal one thousand naira individual donation,” he said.
Earlier, the Operations Manager, Alhaji Maruf said that the foundation apart from the food and cash donated to widows and orphans during Ramadan also empowers them after Ramadan with entrepreneurship skills and tools for them to be able to fend for themselves.
