A National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) member, Nwania Chibundo Winifred has donated a modern library equipped with books and computer to Dr. Teslim Elias Model Primary School in Lagos Island.

The commissioning of the library, which took place recently, was witnessed by the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) Lagos Island Local Government Inspector, Mrs. Patience Ukpe, the Zonal Inspector, ‘B’ Zone, Lagos NYSC, Mrs. Stella Nweke and the Education Secretary for Lagos Island Local Government Education Authority, Moshood Olanrewaju Maiyegun among others.

Disclosing the reason for deciding provide the library, Winifred said she was moved to embark on the project because of a message she once heard that one should always meditate on what one can do for one’s country and not always on what the country could do for you.

She said: “I began to think of how I would buy books for a school and after our orientation camp, I did a research which revealed that many schools in the area I was posted had no library.

This made me to be racking my brain on how to provide books for them; not only to provide books but also to get a place where the books provided can be read comfortably in an environment conducive for reading. This was how I came up with the idea of a library equipped with books and computer, which is a necessary facility in a modern library.

Having settled for a library, the next challenge I had was where to locate the project. After a thorough search for an ideal place, I settled for Dr. Taslim Elias Primary School because the pupils in the school had no books and a place to read. The project was established with about N993,605 that I sourced mainly from my sponsor. I hope the school authority would make the best use of the library for the pupils” she said.

In her opening remarks at the library commissioning ceremony, Mrs. Ukpe said that personal community project forms one of the cardinal points of NYSC projects, adding that every Corps member is expected to look around for the need of the community at the primary place of assignment and make positive impact.
She disclosed that Winifred, because of her passion for children took up the challenge and resolved to provide a functional library.
