Tele-surgery, which allows a surgical procedure to be performed from a distance by a remote surgeon, was demonstrated live as the surgical team prepared to commence the process, with the crew crossing into the sterile zone of the theatre to gear up for the medical session.

Before the incision was made, the human element took centre stage as the surgeon held a brief reassuring session with a 28-year-old young woman whose prime years had been paused by a continuing health challenge. The robotics offered her a fresh shot at life after her long ordeal.

Speaking ahead of the procedure, the patient expressed confidence in the process and in God to see her through the surgery successfully.
There was a palpable sense of optimism in the air as the surgical team prepared for the operation, with one member of the team expressing confidence that everyone would be pleased with the outcome by the end of the day. Once the anaesthesia took effect and vital signs were confirmed stable, the theatre was set, and the robotics began work on the patient, who was expected to be discharged the same day due to the minimal trauma associated with the procedure. It was explained that after the urethra was dissected and the pelvis dissected out, the blockage in the pelvis would be repaired and freed so that urine could begin flowing normally, a condition the patient had suffered from for 28 years.

Following the successful completion of the first surgery, the surgical team briefly reviewed the experience. Speaking after the operation, a member of the surgical team said the following:
“We are planning that if we finish early enough today, this young lady will go home today. The patients we operated on a couple of days ago went home yesterday. So, for me, it is immensely gratifying that this kind of technology is not only available; it’s available in Nigeria, it’s available at the Redeemers Health Hospital, and that, glory be to God, I’m alive and still practicing to witness that kind of evolution.”

The day’s innovation, however, had only just begun, as the team proceeded to the groundbreaking telesurgery session, involving a surgeon in Lagos operating on a patient physically located in Abuja. Describing the process, the surgeon explained that the equipment inside the patient in Abuja would be controlled remotely from Lagos, allowing the surgery to be performed as though the patient were present in the same room, even though no patient was physically in Lagos during the procedure.

Through secure, near-zero latency broadband technology, every movement of the doctor’s fingers in Lagos was replicated instantly by robotic arms in Abuja, a scenario once considered the realm of science fiction now playing out in real time. Once the sutures were secured and the connection closed, the multi-city surgical team, led by Robomed, expressed delight at the success of the procedure, describing it as proof that distance is no longer a barrier to expert surgical care.

It was reported that the patient in Abuja did exceptionally well, with minimal blood loss recorded, and was expected to be discharged from the hospital the following day, all things being equal. Reflecting on the outcome, a member of the surgical team expressed excitement, noting that hard work backed by divine support had produced encouraging results. The team further disclosed that seeing patients go home within 24 hours over the preceding three days had left them satisfied with the solution and the wider project, stressing that the goal was not merely to carry out procedures and leave, but to build a sustainable healthcare system. It was also noted that the initiative was designed to give Nigerians in the diaspora the confidence to return home, knowing they could access the same quality of care in Nigeria that they would find abroad.
