Test before treatment key to curbing malaria epidemic

Professor Wellington Oyibo is a Consultant Medical Parasitologist and Director, Research and Innovation Office, University of Lagos.

Medical test before treatment of malaria has been described as the most effective way to eliminate malaria epidemic in Nigeria. Delivering his Inaugural Lecture at the University of Lagos, titled parasitus facultas et humanum intelligentia, Prof. Wellington Oyibo, said there are misconceptions between general fevers and malaria fevers.

Oyibo said: “People treat malaria using drugs bought over the counter. When they do not get better, they feel the drugs are not effective. Reason medical test before treatment is the best solution.

“We need to step up prevention interventions and case management, test and drugs should be made available. Now, we know peoples’ immunities are changing and as immunity is coming down, more people are likely to die of malaria.”
