In a health system where the accuracy of a single laboratory result can shape the course of a patient’s treatment, few professions demand the discipline that medical laboratory science does, and fewer still earn public recognition for it. That recognition has now been earned by a decade-long career spanning hospital laboratories, molecular testing and public health research. Uzoka Ikenna Samuel has been named Outstanding Medical Laboratory Technology and Digital Diagnostics Professional of the Year 2022 by the Nigeria Technology Awards (NiTA), a national programme that has recognised individuals and organisations for technology excellence and innovation in Nigeria since 2015.

Mr. Uzoka, who holds the MLS(ASCPi) credential from the American Society for Clinical Pathology, was honoured for his contributions to laboratory diagnostics and the growing use of digital and molecular platforms in patient care across Nigeria’s health institutions.

“I am genuinely happy, and still a little overwhelmed, because this honour did not come out of nowhere, it came out of ten years of work,” Mr. Uzoka said. “When I think about where this journey started, as a young graduate from the University of Benin in 2014 running basic panels in a 50-bed hospital in Kaduna, and where it has led, this award feels like a validation of every shift and every certification I pursued along the way.”

Mr. Uzoka earned a Bachelor’s degree in Medical Laboratory Science from the University of Benin in 2014 and a Master’s degree in Public Health Epidemiology and Medical Statistics from the University of Lagos in 2019. In the years that followed, he worked at the National Assembly Hospital and Yussuf Dantshoho Memorial Hospital before becoming Laboratory Manager at Bio Rapid Diagnostics in Abuja, and then Senior Medical Laboratory Scientist at Zankli Medical Services, a tertiary reference laboratory handling roughly a thousand samples a day, a position he held from January 2020.

At Zankli, his responsibilities extended into molecular diagnostics, running PCR-based testing on platforms such as the GeneXpert system and Abbott’s ID NOW point-of-care device, both of which Nigeria relied on heavily during the COVID-19 response.

“Digital diagnostics is not a luxury anymore, it is the direction the entire profession is moving in,” Mr. Uzoka said. “The future of accurate, fast diagnosis in Nigeria depends on scientists who are equally comfortable at the bench and with the technology driving it.”

By 2022, Mr. Uzoka was an Associate Member of the Medical Laboratory Science Council of Nigeria and the Association of Medical Laboratory Scientists of Nigeria, and an Associate Member of the Health and Care Professions Council in the United Kingdom. His training record included certifications in ISO 15189:2012 laboratory quality standards, ISO 9001:2015 quality management systems, and a leadership and management in health course completed through the University of Washington.

Outside the laboratory, Mr. Uzoka had volunteered on Nigeria’s National Malaria Eradication Programme, the National Youth Service Corps Gender Vanguard initiative supporting survivors of gender-based violence, and a mental health outreach campaign in Abuja.

Asked what the recognition means to him, Mr. Uzoka traced it back through the arc of his career, from part-time bench work at the National Assembly Hospital, through laboratory management in Abuja, and into the molecular diagnostics suite at Zankli Medical Services.

“When people see the award, they see one moment, but I see the whole timeline behind it, the degree in 2014, the certifications, the training,” Mr. Uzoka said. “This award is not just about 2022, it is about every year that came before it, and it motivates me to keep pushing the standard of diagnostics practice higher.”

For Mr. Uzoka, the award closes a chapter that began with a single degree in 2014 and grew into a career built on the same standard that opened this profile: that a laboratory result is only as reliable as the scientist behind it. The Nigeria Technology Awards says its Outstanding Medical Laboratory Technology and Digital Diagnostics Professional category exists to recognise exactly that, singling out individuals whose work has strengthened the accuracy, speed and reach of diagnostic services across Nigeria’s health system.
