Igbo lawyers task FG on Kanu’s rights, Onnoghen’s confirmation
Lawyers of Igbo extraction under the aegis of Otu Oka-Iwu Law Society, have urged the Federal Government to ensure that detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Mr. Nnamdi Kanu is accorded all his civil rights.
In a statement on the ‘state of the nation’ signed by its President, Chief Chuks Ikokwu, the group expressed concern on the reported secret trial of Kanu, saying Federal Government (FG) must ensure that he and other defendants are accorded their full rights under the Constitution of Nigeria.
The association also said the failure of the FG to appoint a substantive Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), has truncated the succession plan in the judiciary and urged the government to redress the situation.
“FG must take immediate steps to redress the uncertainty occasioned by this unfortunate situation by acting swiftly on the recommendations of the Federal Judicial Service Commission and the National Judicial Council (NJC),” it said.
The association also expressed its discontent over the Amnesty International (AI), report indicting Nigerian security agencies for extra-judicial execution of ‘unarmed Biafran agitators’ in the South-East and the massacre of defenceless women and children in Southern Kaduna by gunmen without any protection from government.
However, the association also commended the FG for the reported release of funds for commencement of work on the Second Niger Bridge and the ongoing rehabilitation of some South East roads and urged the government to ensure that the projects are not abandoned mid-stream.
