Lawyers tasked on professional ethics

The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) Ikeja branch has urged lawyers to adhere to ethics and practice direction of the legal profession.

The group also admonished lawyers to always do routine checks on their health status due to stress.

The chairman of the branch, Mr Adeniyi Quadri disclosed this while speaking at their branch monthly meeting held at the Bar Centre, Ikeja.

He said that the NBA national has directed that any complaint against any lawyers overdressing should be forwarded to Abuja.

He said female lawyers should dress with modesty, especially their hair should be done in such a manner that the wig will be well placed in their head and avoid big earrings.

He also frowned at the habit of some male lawyers appearing in court with their ceremonial shirts under their gowns.

Quadri announced that there is positive feedback from lawyers who subscribed to the Association HMO plan.

He therefore urged them to make use of it because it is cheaper and also charged lawyers to embark on regular exercises.

On the knowledge-sharing session anchored by the Deputy Chief Executive Officer of Lawbreed, the publishers of the Supreme Court judgment, Mrs Adejoke Layi-Babatunde, emphasised the need to expose lawyers to more knowledge which will eventually make them become not just better legal practitioners but also better people that impact the society.

Mrs Shakira Kotun, a lawyer, and social worker, shared her experience in law and social services.

She spoke extensively on the importance of non-custodial sentences and measures.

She pointed out ways to address the overwhelming number of people in detention facilities and how non-custodial sentences and measures may help to alleviate the situation.

Dr Ademola Owoyele spoke on the importance of routine health checks as a legal practitioner.

He noted that some battle with high blood pressure but don’t know about it.

“It is important to check your health from head to toe. Hypertension is a silent killer, so it is important to know your status on time. Health is better than wealth,” he declared.
