Provost urges students to uphold ethical standards

Provost, Nigerian Institute of Journalism (NIJ), Ogba Lagos, Gbenga Adefaye, has urged students to uphold ethical standards of journalism profession.
Speaking at the institution’s matriculation for the 2024/2025 academic session, he disclosed, “our goal is to train and groom disciplined and excellent professionals who will uphold the highest ethical standard in their profession. We will equip you to go into the world as professionals cum content producers in our new age of communication technology.”
To achieve this, the don assured the new students to look forward to field trips to media houses, advertising agencies and Public Relations firms, students industrial training (IT) for the National Diploma graduating students, sports, inter-college competitions, industrial workshops and others.
Speaking further, he added, “it’s a thing of pride to us to give you a guarantee of a seamless story, with certainty, the year of graduation. There are no strikes. There is no disruption of scheduled programmes. We have our staff members and students to thank for that.”
He also harped on the importance of attendance to lectures, saying, “each student must attain 70 per cent attendance to be qualified to attend the examination.
Continuous assessment through classwork and assignment is obligatory.”
The academic ceremony held at the Kensington Adebutu Media Resource Centre. A total of 304 students participated in the oath-taking ceremony. This includes 127 students under the National Diploma (ND) programme, 82 under the Higher National Diploma (HND), and 95 for the Post Graduate Diploma (PGD) programme.
The institution recently restructured its HND programme, replacing the Print and Broadcast courses with Strategic Communications & Media Studies and Journalism & Media Studies.
Academic and non-academic staff members of the institution, parents and returning students also attended the oath-taking ceremony.
