No fewer than 90 women in Birnin Kebbi Local Government Area of Kebbi State were empowered by OXFAM, in collaboration with the European Union (EU).

Speaking at the distribution of economic assets to beneficiaries at the premises of the Birnin Kebbi Local Government secretariat recently, the Executive Director of Development Exchange Center, Mr. Illiya Gidado Sambo, said the aim was to improve the living standard of women.

He explained that the three organizations had been a leading force in women economic empowerment and promotion of gender justice through income generation activities for them to create their own entrepreneurship.

Items distributed included tailoring, grinding, sewing and spaghetti making machines, as well as soft loans at subsidized rates.

Mr. Sambo further said that the COVID-19 pandemic and the 2020 flood disaster had impacted negatively on many households, adding that “since the beginning of the pandemic, women are more likely than men to have lost their jobs, business and livelihoods because of their insecure types of employment.”

The State Oxfam Coordinator Mr, Faleye Usman, reminded the beneficiaries to make the very best use of the facilities given them.

According to him, the organisation would monitor the beneficiaries on how they utilize the facilities periodically.

Falaye applauded the efforts of the state government for the technical and moral supports to the organizations.
