UNILAG VC hosts Muslim community, promises adequate security for students
The Vice-Chancellor, University of Lagos, Professor Oluwatoyin Ogundipe has hosted Muslim members of the community to iftar meal to promote inter faith tolerance within the institution.
Speaking during the iftar dinner, the vice councellor said the school management decided three years ago to organise iftar for Muslim brothers and sisters in the institution to pray together and break their fast in the Holy month of Ramadan.
“I want everyone to continue to pray for the University of Lagos, we have no other place that we call our own than the University of Lagos. We must see ourselves as brothers and sisters, there must not be any discrimination. Unilag is bigger than all of us and we must have the interest of the institution in mind.”
He added that he grew up in Lagos Island, where there is no dichotomy between Christians and the Muslims.
“We all live together, grow up together, share fellowship together, food together, love together but along the line something happened. But when I came into office representing God as the Vice Councellor of Unilag, I made up my mind that at every Ramadan I would call my Muslim brothers and sisters together to break fast together. “
He assured adequate protection for students as they resume academic section.
“As students resume academic activities, we have put things in place to improve the security architecture of the campuses. We have our own structure in place that we are always using to protect the community.”
