WAEC, firm reward best performing schools, candidates

The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) in partnership with Information and Communications Technology (ICT) company, Vatebra Limited, has given out awards to best performing schools and candidates in the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) for the 2020 academic year.

The awards were presented to winners at the formal opening ceremony of the 59th yearly meeting of the Nigeria National Committee, as part of its corporate social responsibility.

The awards were based on the following categories: Best Public Secondary School in Sciences, Overall Best Public Secondary School in all subjects, Best Overall Female Candidate in all subjects and Best overall male candidate in all subjects in public secondary schools.

Ayebode High School, Ekiti State, won best public secondary school in sciences: with a cash prize of N1.5m; Community Secondary School, Abajah, Owerri, Imo State, won overall best public secondary school in all subjects with a cash prize of N2.5m; Okorie Nkechinyere of the Federal College of Education Technical Secondary School, Akoka, Lagos State, won Best Overall Female Candidate in all subjects with a cash prize of N500, 000, while Adeosun Idris Ayotunde of Airforce Comprehensive School, Iyana Offa, Oyo State, won Best Overall Male Candidate in all subjects and also received N500, 000.

Head of WAEC National Office, Patrick Areghan, gave a brief background of the awards and milestones achieved by the examinations body in recent years, while Head, educational bodies at Vatebra Limited, Oluwole Aduloju, said one major criterion met by winners of the competition was excellence.
